Water Tank Project

Nerio Family

José Sergio Nerio is a 56 year-old native of El Salvador that was born and raised on the San Salvador volcano. He is the father of four children and a grandfather of four. He is a farmer by trade and enjoys working the land that was handed down to him by his mother. Besides coffee, he cultivates a variety of fruits and vegetables, and decorative plants and flowers. He truly has a “green thumb.” A hard-working man, he finds work where he can, such as back-breaking work cutting coffee, construction, and selling his crops. He and his wife, Efigenia, take pride in their land and their work. They are incredibly generous people, always hospitable to guests, feeding them their best food even when they have almost nothing for themselves. Guests will find themselves eating a freshly killed chicken, a rich soup, freshly made tortillas, and drink Coca-cola bought from the village below, even though the family often eats just beans and rice when several of the members are without work. Their house is tidy and clean, with dirt floors and adobe walls. Their church provided materials to build a concrete addition when their entire house was destroyed during the 2001 earthquakes. The Nerios are providing the coffee that Close to You, Inc. sells to raise funds for its projects.

The Nerio Home, built out of wood and adobe. They collect rain water from a roof gutter that runs into rusty barrels during the 6 month rainy season.
Green and Red (ripe) coffee on the Nerio Plantation.
During the 6 month dry season, the Nerios make up to 10 trips a day hauling water up a steep hill to fill their barrels to provide water for daily cooking and cleaning needs.
The Water Tank is delivered to the Nerio’s property. This type of water truck will bring water to fill the tank.
